Hold onto your popcorn and lock up your wallets. Like a movie villain that simply will not stay down, MoviePass is back in our inboxes.
If you were around for the chaotic days of 2017 and 2018, you know the exact emotional roller coaster I am talking about. In the beginning, MoviePass was the absolute holy grail of entertainment. A movie a day for ten dollars a month? It sounded too good to be true. I loved it so much that I practically became a promoter for them. I even bought a thousand shares of stock in their parent company!
Then things went downhill fast.
The Great MoviePass Disaster
If you have watched the documentaries detailing the circus behind MoviePass, you already know the story. Corporate greed, questionable financial decisions, and executives burning through tens of millions of dollars like lighter fluid.
For us regular subscribers, using the service turned into an extreme sport.
Remember their daily cash limit phase? MoviePass only set aside a small pool of funds each day for ticket purchases. Naturally, moviegoers on the East Coast would wake up, hit the box office, and completely drain the daily cash pool before lunchtime.
By the time those of us out West woke up or got off work, the app would hit us with the dreaded message: "There are no more screenings available at your theater today."
We paid for a full annual subscription, yet we could not watch a single movie! Living in places like Arizona, we had no choice but to throw our hands in the air, abandon MoviePass entirely, and go sign up for AMC A-List / Stubs just to actually see a movie on a Friday night.
The Return of the Annual Pass
Fast forward to right now, and look what landed in our promotional feeds:
They are running a promotion called the "FALL BACK OFFER" with the discount code MPFALLFLICKS26:
The Pitch: "12 MONTHS. PAY FOR 9. Get 3 months free when you go annual."
Everywhere Else: $117 / year (Regularly $156)
NYC & LA: $180 / year (Regularly $240)
Offer Ends: 11.01.26 at 2:00 AM ET
Notice how the promotional graphic prominently features posters for major upcoming releases like Avengers: Doomsday, Werewolf, and Dune: Part Three. They are pulling out all the stops to make you feel like you will miss out on the biggest cinematic events of the year if you do not lock in for 12 months right now.
Can We Really Trust an Annual Pass Again?
Let us pretend for a second that we are cheering them on. ๐
Hooray! Competition is great for moviegoers! Co-founder Stacy Spikes came back, bought the company out of bankruptcy, and switched to a credit-based system so it is actually sustainable! We love a good comeback story!
...Okay, cheer over.
Asking moviegoers to sign up for a FULL YEAR upfront is bold after what happened last time. The trauma of paying upfront for an annual subscription, only to have the app break, the rules change overnight, or the company collapse, is real.
Will this credit-based version work without locking West Coast users out when East Coasters buy up all the tickets? Maybe! Is $117 a year a solid deal if it actually holds up? Absolutely.
Are we deeply suspicious that history is going to repeat itself? Absolutely.
What Do You Think?
Are you brave enough to drop a full year's payment on MoviePass again, or are you sticking with AMC Stubs and Regal? Sign in with your Discord account and leave a comment to let us know!
