Did Hollywood Run Out of Ideas?

The Hollywood movie industry is in a state of flux. With big budget blockbusters being released year after year, many people are questioning whether the industry is running out of ideas. Lets explore the current state of Hollywood, including the types of movies being produced, reasons why movie ideas may be running low, examples of Hollywood’s over reliance on reboots and remakes, alternatives to using the same ideas over and over again, and potential consequences of not having original movie ideas.

The types of movies that Hollywood is currently producing is heavily reliant on sequels, reboots, and remakes. Superhero films are dominating the box office, with Marvel’s “Avengers” series leading the way in terms of popularity and success. Aside from popular franchises, live action remakes of classic Disney animated films have also become increasingly common, such as The Jungle Book (2016), Beauty and the Beast (2017), and Aladdin (2019).

So why are so many of the same ideas being reused? One reason could be Hollywood’s desire for a safe bet. Reboots and remakes require less risk than creating an entirely new idea, as the story and characters are typically already familiar to audiences. Furthermore, Hollywood is increasingly hiring directors with little to no experience and production companies are pushing agendas through their films. All these factors can lead to a lack of originality and an overabundance of similar movies.

On a side note here are 3 recent films that had little to no experience Directing a movie prior to directing the film mentioned:

  1. Wonder Woman 1984 (released in 2020): Directed by Patty Jenkins
  2. The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020): Directed by Aaron Sorkin
  3. Spiderman- Into the Spider-Verse (2018) Co-Directed Bob Persichett

It would only be fair to also point out movies like Arctic that Joe Penna made, you may know him as Mystery Guitar Man on YouTube. This was his first time Directing a feature film, and the movie turned out amazing. So inexperienced directors are not solely to blame.

In order to prevent running out of movie ideas, Hollywood needs to start introducing more original stories. One approach could be to nurture talent and provide more opportunities for upcoming filmmakers, and actors. There is also a shortage of animators in the industry, and if this is addressed it could open up possibilities for experimental and original animated films to be made.

Ultimately, Hollywood needs to step away from relying on the same ideas time and time again in order to remain successful and retain its status as a powerhouse in the film industry. Without fresh ideas and creative stories, the appeal of Hollywood movies could fade, leading to a decline in box office revenues and a decrease in public interest.

This doesn’t mean you should avoid going to the movies altogether. Instead, make an effort to seek out films where directors are taking risks and pushing boundaries. By supporting these brave filmmakers, you’re investing in the future of filmmaking and encouraging filmmakers to come up with innovative ideas. Watching those types of films is also a great way to stay in touch with new trends in movie-making, as well as experience something fresh and exciting that you wont be able to predict.
